Revealing global risks of labor abuse and illegal, unreported, and unregulated fishing

Abstract
Labor abuse and IUU fishing threaten human rights, food security, and government revenues, with risks widespread across global ports—57% showed links to these issues. Using satellite data and vessel characteristics, the study found that 82% of trips to assessed ports were connected to labor or IUU fishing risks, often driven by weak governance and certain vessel flags. The findings emphasize the importance of port-based measures and coordinated international action to effectively address and prevent these unsustainable practices. https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-022-28916-2
