The Environmental Niche of the Global High Seas Pelagic Longline Fleet

Abstract
The authors research and analyse the increasing effort of fishing noting the rapid increase of distance fishers are travelling to their fishing grounds. They authors highlight that since 1950, heavily subsidized fleets have increased the total fished area from 60% to more than 90% of the world’s oceans, doubling the average distance traveled from home ports but catching only one-third of the historical amount per kilometer traveled.
